Fashion Through My Eyes
Fashion plays a really big role in my life. In the past 2 years, I have tried endlessly to go out of my comfort zone and to try new fashion looks. I would describe my own style as comfortable streetwear, with neutral tones.
In the 2 years that I have been trying to express myself more, I have realized that this generation is very interesting. Especially in school, I see everyone wearing the same type of style. Which there is nothing wrong with it but I understand that people have their own unique style but why are they afraid to express it? With my own research trying to figure how to express myself I have come across some very amazing and eye-opening fashion designers and inspirations who inspire me so much.
This artist is the first person who really showed me that I don’t and shouldn’t care about what other people think and their opinions about me. His name is Kerby Jean-Raymond. Kerby is a Haitian-African fashion designer from New York. I first saw him on “Next in Fashion” the television show. After that episode, I chose to follow him on social media and I was shocked.
His designs are so unique and futuristic but they also give off a sense of street style and comfort. When I saw his designs I immediately knew this is what I was seeking. At that moment I knew I found my “style”, for the longest time I was confused about my own sense of style but he really showed me that I need to express myself however I feel and not worry about the “latest trends” or how since I am a woman I should dress a certain way.
For sure Kerby really inspired and to this day still continues to inspire me and his way of expressing himself with his own clothes and on his designs gives me a sense of inspiration. Kerby is important to me because first of all, he is the first “designer” that I have seen in which I could relate to and secondly I don't know how but I felt like I finally understood the power of clothing and how diverse it could be.
The next person who really showed me and to get out of my comfort zone is Jaden Smith. Jaden Smith is an American singer, songwriter, rapper and actor. Jaden Smith is ultimately not known as a fashion designer however his style truly is one of a kind.
In an interview, Jaden explains that his style really comes from the character Batman. In the interview, he goes on to tell that each of Batman’s suits is unique in their own ways and expresses different times periods and styles.
It’s also very known that Jaden Smith most of the time creates or modifies his own clothing. Examples of this include cutting out patterns from different clothes and sewing them onto existing clothing like pants and wearing ripped pieces as well.
Overall seeing Jaden Smith for the first time really gave me a culture shock and he shows me that I really don’t need to care about what people think, because in the end if I like what I’m wearing that is all that matters. Jaden Smith also plays an important role in the people who inspire me because not just in the fashion he carries his beautiful art also in his music and acting.
The third person who has inspired me is Zendaya Coleman, she is an American actress and singer. Zendaya has been seen in public with her boyfriend Jacob Elordis and they both have been shown to have a very interesting street style. She is seen to wear comfortable baggy clothing which I love and she also defeats the stereotype of women having to wear clothing that is flattering to their bodies and is considered “girly”
Zendaya has really shown me that I don’t need to dress girly just to fit the feminine beauty standard. She breaks that stereotype and expresses her attitude and personality in her own way. I have always looked up to her in a way and her style if just one of many things that inspire me.
The final person who has captivated me with their fashion is Travis Scott. Travis Scott is an American singer, rapper and record producer. His fashion is described at street style with comfortable aspects and edgy looks.
Travis Scott has really surprised me, once I started to do research on him I discovered that he is a very chill and laid back type of person and it shows in his clothing. He wears not too flashy colours and keeps it simple, which I very much like and try to apply that into my own style.
With his calm personality and fashion that influenced me to not take myself so seriously. When I want to wear an item I shouldn’t be thinking too hard about if it looks right or anything like that. He really showed me that not everything is so serious.
Like many others, fashion plays an important part in my life and these different artists and influencers have really taught me different aspects of fashion itself. I am so proud that I can fully express myself through my clothes and wear the items I truly love.
